Changes to CPT Codes for FA and ICG
Question: How did CPT codes 92235 and 92240 change Jan. 1, 2017?
Answer: In surveys by the American Medical Association’s Relative Value-Scale Update Committee (“the RUC”), Academy and ASRS members revalued both 92235 and 92240. As a result, payment significantly changed. The following changes reflect relative value units recommended by RUC and approved by CMS:
- Work RVUs are based on physician time and intensity.
- Fluorescein angiography: 17 minutes
- Indocyanine-green angiography: 22 minutes
- FA/ICG: 22 minutes
- Practice expense RVUs are based on tech time and supplies.
- Equipment cost constitutes a minor role.
In addition, the CPT description now includes unilateral or bilateral. CMS pays the same whether you test one or both eyes.
