  • Correcting Ptosis Procedure

A patient had bilateral ptosis surgery at an ambulatory surgery center (CPT 67904 Mod: 50) During 90-day global period, the patient was seen in the office by the same surgeon, and it was determined that the right eye needed adjustment. Additional ptosis procedure was performed in the office to correct the overcorrection.
Is this billable, and if so, is there an appropriate CPT code?

Answer: From the CPT Pocket Reference: CPT 67909 Reduction of overcorrection of ptosis.

Clues from the Coding Coach: Typically performed during the global period to reduce overcorrection.

The appropriate modifier would be -78 Unplanned return to OR/procedure room for related procedure by the same physician during the postop period, and well as the eye modifier.
