    Countdown to new E/M requirements beginning Jan. 1

    Follow these steps to help your practice shore up any outstanding items before the evaluation and management (E/M) documentation requirements go into effect on Jan. 1. For more information, the Academy has continued education at aao.org/em.

    1. Remove CPT code 99201 from your superbill/charge sheet and electronic health records (EHR).

    2. Create excel spreadsheets with new Medicare and other payer allowables for both E/M and Eye visit codes.

    3. Engage everyone who documents in the chart to make sure they understand the changes and can effectively implement them.

    4. Practice implementation of the new medical decision-making guidelines.

    The new E/M documentation requirements will help streamline care under the direction of the physician.
