  • CPT codes for Medicare Part B patient with shingles

Our doctor saw an existing patient with Medicare Part B in the hospital for a brief consult for shingles. Which range of CPT codes should we use?

On January 1, 2010, CMS replaced CPT codes 99251 – 99255 with 99221-99223 for initial hospital care. Use this family of codes for the initial visit. It doesn’t matter if the patient is new or established. The place of service is 21. The new E/M documentation requirements does not apply to this family of codes. Document using the 1997 guidelines.
