Question: Our ophthalmologist doesn’t not always document the interpretation and report the same day the test is performed. Should we be billing the technical component the day the test is performed and the professional component on the day of the interpretation?

Answer: No. When you own the equipment and perform the test, you should not break-out -TC/-26 components. It is an aberrant billing pattern and may draw unnecessary audit attention. Staff who perform the test should make sure the interpretation is documented and the results are conveyed to the patient within a timely matter.
