Effective Date of ICD-10
Question: I am confused when ICD-10 codes go into effect, as they are referred to as 2017 ICD-10 codes. Do they go into effect in 2016 or 2017?
Answer: Any new or revised ICD-10 codes go into effect every Oct. 1. As of Oct. 1, 2016, ophthalmology has 368 new and revised diagnosis codes. Keep in mind, not all payers will have their systems updated by this date, so you may experience denials initially.
CPT codes take effect each Jan. 1.
