  • EUA During Cataract Surgery

Question: Our surgeon performed cataract surgery on a Down syndrome patient. During the surgery he performed an exam under anesthesia (EUA) due to the patients cognitive and emotional limitations. Previously, we have billed CPT code 92499 to bill the exam under anesthesia. We are confirming billing and modifier application?

Answer: Only bill cataract surgery. EUAs are bundled in with surgery and not separately billable. When submitting for an EUA, the following codes would be used:

92018 Ophthalmological examination and evaluation, under general anesthesia, with or without manipulation of globe for passive range of motion or other manipulation to facilitate diagnostic examination; complete

92019 Ophthalmological examination and evaluation, under general anesthesia, with or without manipulation of globe for passive range of motion or other manipulation to facilitate diagnostic examination; limited
