Exams for Family Members
Question: Our physician’s husband had cataract surgery performed by another surgeon, but she will manage her husband’s postoperative care. Which modifier(s) do we append for payment of the global period?
Answer: Unfortunately, claims for services provided to family members are ineligible. Payers define family members as including:
- Husband/wife;
- Domestic partners;
- Members of household;
- Natural or adoptive parent/child/sibling;
- Step-parent, step-child or step-sibling;
- Father-in-law and mother-in-law;
- Son-in-law and daughter-in-law.
