  • Follow-Up Exam Prior To Cataract Surgery

If a cataract patient comes in for pre-surgical testing and discussion of the cataract surgery can the physician charge an evaluation and management (E/M) code? The patient has already had a comprehensive eye exam to determine the need for the surgery.

    Answer:
If the only reason for the follow-up examination is to perform additional testing and education related to the upcoming surgery. You can bill for the medically necessary testing services but not the discussion about cataract surgery.
