  • Frequency Edits for Optic Nerve OCT

Question: Does CPT code 92133 Scanning computerized ophthalmic diagnostic imaging; optic nerve have frequency edits??

Answer: Once per year would be appropriate to follow pre-glaucoma patients or those with “mild damage.” If patients have “moderate damage,” it’s appropriate to follow the diagnosis with this test or visual fields. One or two tests per year may be appropriate.

That said, payers don’t consider it medically necessary to perform both tests: optic nerve evaluation and visual fields, done together or separated by a short period of time. However, alternating use of these tests at the proper time intervals can be considered appropriate. Alternation may also increase the sensitivity of detecting glaucomatous damage.

For patients with “advanced damage,” visual field testing is preferred.
