Question: How do you code for prediabetes?
Answer: In the Alphabetical Index if you search on Prediabetes it refers you to R73.09. This is an “Other” code. Prediabetes is defined as an abnormal blood glucose level, an elevated A1c level, or an abnormal glucose tolerance test. Thus R73.01, R73.02 or R73.09 would all be appropriate depending on which test is being used to justify the diagnosis of prediabetes. A diagnosis made based on abnormal A1c would fall into the R73.09 code.
