Modifiers to append for payment on additional treatments
A physician performs CPT code 65810 Paracentesis of anterior chamber of eye (separate procedure); with removal of vitreous and/or discission of anterior hyaloid membrane, with or without air injection multiple times on different days for ocular hypertension following a surgery. Medicare is denying most of the repeat charges. Is there a modifier I should append so that additional treatments can be paid?
CPT 65810 Paracentesis of anterior chamber of eye (separate procedure); with removal of vitreous and/or discission of anterior hyaloid membrane, with or without air injection, has a 90-day global and is not payable again within that global period. Append modifier –78 the first time the procedure is performed. Modifier –78 conveys that the procedure is unplanned but related. Do not begin a new 90-day global period. Payment will be 70% of the allowable.
