Two new Category III codes impacting glaucoma surgeons effective July 1, 2021.

    • 0660T Implantation of anterior segment intraocular nonbiodegradable drug-eluting system, internal approach
    • 0661T Removal and reimplantation of anterior segment intraocular nonbiodegradable drug-eluting implant

These codes were created for the insertion of a drug-eluting implant that gets placed into the trabecular meshwork through an incision, rather than an injection. It is applicable for the iDose implant, from Glaukos. The implant is filled with a proprietary formulation of travoprost and implanted in the angle during a microinvasive procedure. Upon the medication depletion the device can be removed with a new one implanted. The medication will be separately billable. Currently it is part of clinical trials and awaiting FDA approval.  As with all new Category III codes, payment if any is at the payer’s discretion. These and other Category III codes can be found in the Coding Coach Complete Ophthalmic Reference online product.
