  • Ready to Use JZ Modifier by July 1?

The Academy and AAOE® Fact Sheet: JW and JZ Modifiers provides ophthalmic-specific guidance for the implementation of JZ modifier that you can use beginning July 1.

The guidance is important because claims not submitted with JZ modifier when appropriate by Oct. 1 may be denied and may not be processed.

Although retina practices are mostly affected, JW and JZ modifiers could affect all subspecialties. When single-dose vials of medication are used (e.g., Botox, Omidria, Vabysmo) and submitted for reimbursement, one of these modifiers must be appended to the HCPCS code as appropriate.

Exceptions include multidose vials, sample drugs and specialty pharmacy distributed medications, as outlined in the fact sheet.
