  • Referring Patient to Partner During Global Period

Question: Our patient is in the global period for cataract surgery, and it’s been determined she has cystoid macular edema (CME). We referred her to a retina specialist in our practice. Is the exam billable with modifier -24?

Answer: Physicians in a group share the global period. As the CME is related to the cataract surgery, the exam is post-op, and not separately billable. However, any testing performed is billable without a modifier.
