  • Release of Posterior Synechiae With Complex Cataract Surgery

Question: What CPT would we use for complex cataract with release of posterior synechiae?

Answer: The complex cataract code, 66982, is bundled with CPT 65875 Severing adhesions of anterior segment of eye, incisional technique (with or without injection of air or liquid) (separate procedure); posterior synechiae. When these two procedures are performed during the same surgical session by the same surgeon and on the same eye, it is not appropriate to unbundle when integral to the procedure and no more than a sweep between the iris and lens under viscoelastic through the incisions used for the cataract surgery.
