Surgeon Treating Patient in Co-management
Question: A patient is being co-managed for cataract surgery and has now returned to the surgeon for a related complaint. Is the surgeon able to bill for the exam?
Answer: For the surgeon to bill for a visit related to the surgery once care has been turned over to the non-surgical ophthalmologist or optometrist, the co-management claim must be amended to show the date not included in care.
Typically, the surgeon chooses not to bill for the service. The surgeon should then communicate the findings with the person co-managing post-operative care.
