Timing of Postoperative Period
Question: Does the global period start from the comprehensive examination date or the surgical date?
Answer: The global period is associated with the surgical procedure. Payment for the surgery covers components: approximately10 percent preoperative, 70 percent intra-operative and 20 percent postoperative. Each surgery payment includes a certain amount for postoperative exams, although CMS does not publish the amounts. Start the global period the first day after surgery.
