Billing for Partly Removed Crystalline Lens
Question: During cataract surgery, the surgeon could not remove the lens. However, the surgeon placed the intraocular lens. What CPT code should I submit?
Answer: Strange as it seems, still submit CPT code 66984 Extracapsular cataract removal with insertion of intraocular lens prosthesis. At a later date, when the lens is removed, submit CPT code 66850 Removal of lens material; phacofragmentation technique or 66852 if pars plana approach, with or without vitrectomy.
