  • Why Your Standing Orders Will Not Be Paid

Question: Why is my standing order not being paid?

Answer: Payers expect each patient to be treated individually and seen by an ordering physician to determine the best course of action.

What is a standing order? When a practice orders tests prior to seeing a patient, they are considered standing orders or screening tests and not billable services. Payers will not pay a claim for a standing order to treat patients with a diagnosis or suspected diagnosis and certain services before the physician has seen them.

Practices continue to have funds recouped when their new patient exams are billed after testing services.

Although it may be more time-efficient to have patient come in beforehand, it’s best to follow the requirements in order to bill only services that are medically necessary.
