  • Bilateral Billing for B-scan

Question: With the change in descriptor for CPT code 76513, do we need to perform the test bilaterally?

Answer: Beginning Jan. 1, the CPT description reads 76513 Ophthalmic ultrasound, diagnostic; anterior segment ultrasound, immersion (water bath) B-scan or high resolution biomicroscopy, unilateral or bilateral. Like any other inherently bilateral test, it does not have to be performed bilaterally, but payment is the same whether one or both eyes are tested. No modifier is needed.

See the Ophthalmic Coding Coach for additional information.
