  • Your Patients May Have New Medicare Cards

Medicare beneficiaries have cards with a new look, which you now may be seeing at your practices. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services began issuing the new cards in April.

The cards have a QR code, which is a type of bar code. Practices will not use this code, as it’s there only to verify the card is being sent to the correct beneficiary. Railroad Medicare cards will have the code on the front, while traditional Medicare cards will include it on the back.

CMS is issuing the new cards in groupings by state. Learn more about which group your state is in at aao.org/MBI

If patients are concerned that they have not received their new card, you can suggest they go to MyMedicare.gov or call 1-800-Medicare to find out whether it has been mailed.
