  • Innovative Ways to Connect With YO Colleagues at AAO 2020 Virtual

The Academy’s first virtual meeting brings with it brand new ways to connect with friends. The year 2020 is one of the virtual liaison, and the virtual annual meeting remains ophthalmology’s largest social gathering.

    Here are some examples:

    Orbital Gala

Get your favorite vintage outfit or show costume ready because the virtual Orbital Gala 2020 is coming soon to a screen near you. This year’s gala is free, so there’s no excuse not to join your colleagues for an hour of fun at 5 p.m. PT on Saturday, Nov. 14.

The 17th-annual fundraiser will be a fast-paced party complete with drinks and appetizers (bartender and chef not included) and comedic cameos from Academy leaders. You also won’t want to miss out on an auction for more than 80 items — including conversations with legends, luxury getaways, ophthalmic equipment and premium sports tickets. Your generosity will help raise funds for the Academy’s new Truhlsen-Marmor Museum of the Eye, opening in 2021.

With this free, all-virtual event, the Academy expects an even bigger crowd from the United States and all over the world than in years past!

    Register for #OrbitalGala2020 today.

    Global YO Reception

After the gala, join members from the YO Committee, YO Subcommittees and your colleagues for the free Virtual 2020 Global YO Reception, 6:30 to 8 p.m. PT on Saturday, Nov. 14. Stir up our recommended beverage (or BYOB) and meet us online, where there will be a DJ spinning your favorite songs and taking requests. This fun event will include exciting prizes for “best of” contests, and more.

More details, including registration, will be coming to your inbox on Nov. 6.

Supported in part by Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Co. (OMIC)

    Other Ways to Connect

Your meeting itinerary is going to be packed, but there are a number of other opportunities to have quick check-ins with friends new and old:

    • Visit the EyePlay Experience to relax and hang out with colleagues — you can also join a meditation session, view art or have your own virtual animal encounter!
    • Make plans with colleagues to visit the AAO 2020 Virtual platform at the same time. A special lounge will be available for you to catch up and discuss the sessions you attended.
    • It’s far easier to meet with presenters, authors and exhibitors in a virtual platform than to track them down in a huge convention center. So be sure to set up one-on-one appointments to chat about new projects and new ideas!
