AAO 2018's “Meet with the International Expert” YO Power Hour was a unique opportunity to speak with individuals with varied international experience in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the YO lounge.
This year the two-hour lunch session featured 12 experts who talked about their journey of international work and shared insights on how young ophthalmologists can get involved:
- A young ophthalmologist of any subspecialty can get involved, as the experts’ interests ranged form general ophthalmology to retina, oculoplastics, anterior segment, glaucoma, cataract, public health and medical education.
- There are no limits to the geographic regions of focus, and, as one expert put it, her geographic region was “the globe.”
- It’s important to remember that the magic combination for successful international work includes enthusiasm for travel and love for global ophthalmology, cemented by a physician’s availability and time commitment.
This year attracted the record number of attendees, and although we ran out of chairs, we never ran out of topics of conversation!
