Young ophthalmologists from around the globe had an opportunity to meet with colleagues and YO leaders from different regions to network and learn about what’s new and exciting from YOs in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Africa.
We heard from YO leaders from the European Society of Ophthalmology (Marie Louise Roed-Rasmussen, MD, PhD), the Pan American Academy of Ophthalmology (Camila Ventura, MD and Jorge Fortun, MD) and the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (Marcus Ang, MD) as well as the Leadership Development Program with the African Ophthalmology Council in East Africa (Sid Gicheru, MD). Here are some ways to get involved around the world:
- The AAO has many resources for those who are interested in Global Ophthalmology- check out the Global Ophthalmology guide!
- Vision 2020. Learn more about VISION 2020, a global initiative of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). The initiative seeks to eliminate the main causes of preventable blindness in order to give all people in the world, particularly the millions of needlessly blind, the right to sight by the year 2020.
- International YOs who are interested in fellowships and observerships in the US should check out the Global Directory of Training Opportunities. This Global Directory provides you with a listing of ophthalmic training opportunities, including externships, fellowships, internships, observerships and preceptorships, available around the world.
- There are YO programs in the upcoming PAAO, APAO and World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC) meetings. See you there!
