  • Your Key to a Great AAO 2016: Advance Planning

Ophthalmologists from around the world will gather for AAO 2016 in Chicago this fall, Oct. 15 to 18. Wherever in the world you practice, it’s a great opportunity for young ophthalmologists to learn new treatment techniques, reconnect with good friends and much more. Australian young ophthalmologist Brent Gaskin, MBChB, shares his tips for a great meeting.

AAO 2016 is held in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology.

    Brent J. Gaskin, MBChB

    Name: Brent Gaskin
    Subspecialty: Oculoplastics
    Where you practice/train: Melbourne, Australia
    First Academy annual meeting: 2011

What’s your favorite story from last year’s annual meeting? Catching up with Canadian friends whom I had not seen for years. It amazes me how, when seeing a good friend, you simply pick up from where you left off last time you met, even though it may have been years.

What AAO 2016 advice would you give to another young ophthalmologist coming from your region? Plan your time carefully. Probably too late now, but book courses early so as to not miss out. Every year I do attend, I say I'm going to spend more time planning the next time I attend.

What’s on your must-have pack list for the meeting? I would recommend a warm jacket! You never know what Chicago is going to dish up!
