In line with best practices as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the State of California and City of San Francisco, AAO 2023 did not require proof of vaccination for entry to the meeting. However, everyone was strongly encouraged to get their flu shots and the latest COVID booster before arriving onsite. The Academy also endorses the use of masks.

The Academy collaborated with local authorities, including San Francisco police, Moscone Convention Center administrators and the San Francisco Travel Association, to coordinate safety planning during AAO 2023.
