Needless drug waste associated with ophthalmic procedures, including single-use eyedrops, is the topic of Dr. Annie Wu's presentation at the AAO 2023 symposium on "Green Ophthalmology: Our Sustainability Mandate." One study of 4 cataract surgery sites in the United States found that the annual cost of unused pharmaceutical products was more than $195,000 per site; unused eye drops accounted for nearly two-thirds of this cost. A recently published panel statement recommends allowing multiple uses from multiple eye drops and using multidose eye drops until the expiration date.
