Can statins reduce risk of AMD?
JUN 18, 2020
Question:
Can taking statins reduce your chance of developing drusen and therefore AMD?
Answer:
This is an important question that is being studied. There is evidence that of cholesterol deposits in drusen and an association between high-fat diets and retinal disease. So some experts question whether high levels of cholesterol (fat in the blood) in the body may be more closely linked to drusen and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). If the hypothesis is correct, it follows that statins may reduce the chance of developing drusen and AMD. However, this has not been proven and findings have been inconclusive to support the benefit of statins for drusen and AMD. The hope is that further research will offer more insight into this potential therapy.
