Would atropine drops cause visual symptoms in my daughter?
JUN 15, 2023
Question:
My 5-year-old was on atropine to dilate her eyes. Lately she has been saying she can see a blue line when she looks at things. Is this normal?
Answer:
Pupillary dilation with atropine could cause vision disturbances.
I do not know from your question whether this is full strength or low-dose atropine eye drops. Low dose is not supposed to markedly dilate the pupils, when used to slow myopia progression. It would be important to know more about this symptom: whether it is transient (temporary) or constant; when it happens (such as after looking at a light and then fading); or whether the line moves when she moves her eyes. In any case, her ophthalmologist who prescribed the eye drop should be able to evaluate your daughter's eyes to look for any serious issues.
