Question:
Is extreme fatigue a known reaction to Avastin injections? My 86-year-old mother was recently diagnosed with wet AMD in her left eye. She received an Avastin injection, which was well tolerated immediately after, but 24 hours later, she had an extreme bout of fatigue that lasted about 12 hours. She was fine by the next morning, but won’t use Avastin any more as she’s insistent it caused her fatigue.
Answer:
Intravitreal Avastin does carry risks, such as intraocular bleeding, floaters, infection in the eye, eye redness and pain. The side effects are typically temporary and related to the eye. It is not common to have systemic side effects (or those outside the treated area, such as fatigue) following an injection.
I would recommend discussing with your mother's ophthalmologist as well as her primary care physician.
