If a cataract is causing astigmatism, is a Toric IOL necessary?

Question:
If a cataract is causing the astigmatism and the
cataract is removed, why would a Toric lens be necessary?
Answer:
Typically, the
astigmatism you have with a
cataract may come from both the cataract and the
cornea.
The Toric lens corrects the astigmatism that exists due to the corneal curvature. Your surgeon will know these measurements and make the appropriate recommendation. To your point, though, if there is no corneal astigmatism, then you should not require a Toric intraocular lens.
