What should I do if my daughter failed school vision screening?
NOV 14, 2023
Question:
My daughter has been seeing a pediatric ophthalmologist since she was 2. She just had her annual screening two months ago, which found nothing concerning. Her school notified us that she failed the stereopsis portion of her vision screening. Isn’t that something that would have been checked by her pediatric ophthalmologist two months ago?
Answer:
I am glad your daughter has been passing her testing. Pediatric ophthalmologists often do stereo testing as part of annual evaluations. Put simply, “stereopsis” occurs when one’s eyes work well together and the visual input from each eye (or what is seen by each eye) is blended together, providing depth perception.
Stereo testing is an important clue to problems with binocular (two-eyed) vision but often is too hard and the results can be unreliable in children. I would mention the result to your pediatric ophthalmologist who can comment on her past test results.
