When can my 8-month-old get IOLs after having cataracts removed at birth?

Answer:
The timing of placing intraocular lenses (IOL) depends on the child and the condition of the eyes. If the child is doing well with contact lenses, then sometimes that is the best initial treatment. Placement of IOLs is typically withheld until 2 to 4 years of age. However, there may be factors that may limit the ability to place an IOL. For instance, the lens capsule that holds the IOL might not be able to support it. Or there may be other diseases affecting one or both eyes. It is always best to discuss this topic with your child's managing ophthalmologist who knows your child best.
