Quality Measures

The Academy believes quality measures used in MIPS should be clinically meaningful and relevant to ophthalmic practice, and focused on improving patient outcomes. We advocate to ensure that ophthalmic quality measures in the program are developed by ophthalmologists, for ophthalmologists — and that members have a sufficient selection of measures to accurately reflect the care they provide.

Developing ophthalmology-specific measures. Through the IRIS® Registry, the Academy develops and maintains Qualified Clinical Data Registry (QCDR) measures tailored to ophthalmic care. These measures go beyond the standard CMS inventory and capture outcomes and processes that matter most in eye care — providing ophthalmologists with more relevant reporting options than CMS-developed measures alone.

Advocating in rulemaking. The Academy works with CMS through the annual rulemaking process to preserve access to relevant measures, improve existing measure specifications, and ensure ophthalmology is appropriately represented in MIPS and future reporting frameworks. Each year, the Academy reviews proposed additions, modifications, and retirements to the quality measure inventory and submits formal comments to CMS where ophthalmic interests are at stake.

Review the quality measures available at the start of each performance year and select those that are most relevant to your patients and practice.
