• What Is SNOMED and Why Is It Important for Stage 2 Meaningful Use?

SNOMED-CT is an acronym for Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine – Clinical Terminology: SNOMED for short. Recognized throughout the United States and internationally, SNOMED is available at no cost through the National Library of Medicine. SNOMED enables providers and electronic medical records to communicate in a common language, increasing the quality of patient care across many different provider specialties. SNOMED contains more than 311,000 active concepts with unique meanings and formal logic-based definitions organized into hierarchies. Stage 2 Meaningful Use requires use of SNOMED in three areas: (1) problem lists, (2) smoking status and (3) family health history.
