Top 5 Pearls for Dead Bag Syndrome

    Cataract Spotlight/AAO 2023
Cataract/Anterior Segment, Complications, IOLs and Implantation

In this presentation, Dr. Nicole Fram reviews the surgical management of dead bag syndrome. She discusses the qualities of a "dead bag" and delayed intraocular lens (IOL) subluxation and offers her top 5 surgical pearls:

    • Don't insert rings and things to try to refixate the bag.
    • Don't try reverse optic capture or optic capture.
    • Don't place a secondary IOL in the sulcus, even with iris fixation.
    • If you decide to try lasso fixation, use needle-fixation techniques to pierce the posterior and anterior capsules.
    • Understand your plan A and plan B and secondary IOL fixation of choice.
