Should I have laser incision or not for cataract surgery?

Question:
I only have one eye with fully functioning vision and am planning to have cataract surgery performed on this eye. My ophthalmologist highly recommends using the laser to create the incision over the traditional method. Since health insurance does not cover that part, I am wondering how much of a difference it makes and if it is the safer alternative.
Answer:
There is no good evidence that making the incision with a laser is safer or superior, and in general, this is not a risky part of the surgery that you should worry about. Traditional cataract surgery has an excellent prognosis, and the skill and experience of the cataract surgeon are what are most important.
