I was outside with my daughter and accidentally looked directly at the sun for a split second, maybe one to two seconds at most. Can this damage your eyes?
While looking at the sun for a long period of time can permanently damage the retina and result in decreased vision, a brief glance or look is unlikely to harm your retina, eyes, or vision. But be sure to avoid looking directly at the sun, even when wearing sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses when outside is important to protect your eyes from long-term UV damage, but they offer no protection when looking directly at the sun.
