Question:
I am 73 and have a cataract in my left eye. I had 20/20 vision in both eyes until the cataract began to affect vision in my left eye. When I was younger, I had 20/10 vision in both eyes. What IOL is best for someone who doesn't need any correction? All I read is geared to those who are nearsighted or farsighted prior to cataract surgery.
Answer:
Any type of intraocular lens (IOL) can be considered in this situation.
Most commonly a monofocal IOL would be chosen for distance vision, which would require glasses for reading and intermediate vision. An extended depth-of-focus IOL can be used to offer distance with an extension of clarity to the intermediate range and glasses for reading up close. A multifocal IOL can give you vision at all distances with the cost of some glare and halos at night in some cases. Your eye health must be very good (for example, the cornea and retina need to be normal) for this lens to work as is expected. Lastly, a light adjustable IOL may be used, and the post operative vision can be adjusted. For example, it would be possible to have one eye with better distance vision, and then have the second eye adjusted to offer better close vision, as long as it is tolerated.
