With cataract surgery, are there accommodations for those with mobility problems?

Question:
Are there accommodations for cataract surgery patients with mobility problems? My mother is overweight and we're told she needs to be removed from her wheelchair multiple times for testing. Are there workarounds to meet these testing requirements that allow her to stay in her chair?
Answer:
While it is easiest if someone is able to transfer to an exam chair or surgical stretcher, some offices and surgery centers/hospitals are able to accommodate wheelchair-bound individuals who are unable to transfer.
You should discuss your concerns with your mother's ophthalmologist and/or office manager, as they may have such "workarounds." That said, sometimes referral to a different ophthalmologist is necessary and in the patient's best interest.
