Repairing Retinal Artery Damaged by Diabetes
MAR 14, 2014
Question:
My husband has a retinal artery that has been severely damaged by diabetes. His blood sugar is stabilized in the low 100s. Is it possible to regenerate the artery and return normal blood flow?
Answer:
Unfortunately, regeneration of the artery is not possible. However, the blood vessels of the eye often develop what is called "collateral" circulation, which will restore some degree of blood flow to the area of the retina affected by the damage. Certainly good control of blood sugar is critical to reduce the risk of further damage in the future.
