Swollen Cornea and Bowman's Membrane After Cataract Surgery
FEB 21, 2014
Question:
Is it unusual to have swelling of the cornea and Bowman's membrane after cataract surgery?
Answer:
Particularly in denser cataracts, it is common to have swelling in the cornea after surgery because it takes more energy or ultrasound to break up and remove the cataract. This should dissipate within a number of weeks (sometimes months) with medicated drops and time to heal. Rarely, if this does not resolve after a number of months, a procedure known as DSEK can be performed to replace the defective layers of the cornea.
