How do we bill skin cancer screenings?

    Answer:
Skin cancer screenings are generally coded by E/M preventive medicine service codes (99381 – 99397). See CPT professional for additional details.

Coverage is dependent on the patient’s unique plan and always requires a covered diagnosis. Many commercial plans designate that skin cancer screenings are usually provided by dermatology specialists. The scope of the benefit, reimbursement methodology, maximum allowed payment amounts, member cost sharing and other coverage conditions are determined by individual or group coverage.

Examinations performed without relationship to treatment or diagnosis for a specific illness, symptom, complaint or injury are considered routine physical examinations and are not covered under Medicare Part B.
