Staff Billing 99211
Question: Can an administrator bill 99211 under physician supervision or must it be a technician?
Answer: Although referred to as the “technician code”, any staff member can as long as criteria is met. There must be a documented order from the physician detailing what is performed during the encounter. The physician may supervise virtually during the PHE, and the physician must sign the chart. Remember, during the PHE 99211 may be submitted for new or established patients, but it must be either face-to-face or virtual face-to-face with the patient. CPT code 99211 can’t be reported for staff phone calls with the patient.
