  • Can I have prism added to my progressive lenses?

    Question:

I have a prescription for progressives glasses with prism correction for double vision. I've had the prescription filled twice, but each pair had distortion of the lower reading portion due to the prism.

I'm told prism cannot be added to progressives lenses because the prism distorts the lower reading portion where I do not need prism. Is this correct? I use two pairs of eyeglasses now, and while functional, I would much prefer a single pair of progressives if the reading issue can be resolved.

    Answer:

Prism can definitely be added to progressive lenses and should not produce distortion in the reading portion if a good quality lens is used. But it will affect both the distance and near part of the lens. We are not able to make lenses with prism in only one portion of the lens (whether only for reading or only for distance).

If you do not need any prism in your reading portion, then there are two options. First, a clip-on half lens with prism can be made that affects only the part of the lens where prism is needed (these are like clip-on sunglass lenses but with a clear prism lens that has been cut in half). Second, as you are doing, you can have separate glasses for distance and near. You should avoid polycarbonate lenses with any prism glasses as that material can cause distortion.
