Question:
Is it required for blood pressure to be taken prior to YAG surgery?
Answer:
Blood pressure measurement prior to YAG laser surgery is often required by insurance companies like Medicare and by hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers as a matter of good medical practice.
It is most unlikely that the actual laser treatment has a medical reason to raise blood pressure, but sometimes patient anxiety and the eye drops that are used prior to many of the YAG laser procedures can. A person with pre-existing high blood pressure problems might become very anxious about the YAG laser treatment and then experience further blood pressure elevation as a side effect from the pre–YAG eye drops.
