    Foundation Annual Report
Dr. Edmond with her young patient, Saul Rubio. Saul had a brain tumor that left him with impaired vision. Now stable, he attends school. With the aid of larger print and magnifiers, he is doing well.

In recent years, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has experienced the most remarkable growth in our entire history. This is largely thanks to the American Academy of Ophthalmology Foundation, established in 1980. Since then, the Foundation has supported a variety of groundbreaking initiatives and driven our success as the leader in ophthalmic education.

Blindness or visual impairment affects 300 million people worldwide. The Academy Foundation makes a difference. Watch this video to see how at aao.org/foundation.

With the generous support of our donors, we’ve launched some of the most innovative educational, quality-of-care and service programs — not only in ophthalmology, but in all of medicine.

The Ophthalmic News and Education (ONE®) Network has become the world’s most comprehensive online resource for ophthalmic education. The IRIS® Registry (Intelligent Research in Sight) has grown to be the world’s largest clinical data registry in a mere two years. Our global outreach programs have benefited thousands of ophthalmologists in more than 200 countries. EyeCare America® is one of the largest public service programs in American medicine. And the Museum of Vision® has the most extensive collection in the United States dedicated solely to ophthalmic history.

”The Academy Foundation supports initiatives that help ophthalmologists to improve surgical outcomes and medical treatment of eye disease worldwide. I support the Foundation because it’s the right thing to do.”

    JANE C. EDMOND, MD, HOUSTON

These initiatives help ophthalmologists around the globe hone their knowledge and surgical skills, stay on top of clinical advances, provide better patient care and preserve our history for generations to come.

The Academy thanks each and every one of our donors who make these achievements possible.

As a donor, you make an impact that goes far beyond your own community. When you make a gift to the Foundation, you’re also saving the sight of a young boy in Houston, preserving the livelihood of a cameraman in California, and educating residents in Myanmar.

Together, we are empowering lives near and far.
