  • Can treatment for wet AMD cause cataracts?

    Question:
Can treatment for wet AMD cause cataract formation? After one year of monthly injections with aflibercept (Eylea) I developed a cataract in the treated eye. Before treatment there was no cataract, and I always have worn sunglasses with 100% UV ray protection.

    Answer:
Research has not found a link between treatment for wet AMD and cataract. Although cataract is mentioned as a side effect in the manufacturer’s Patient Safety Information for aflibercept, this is not felt to be a common problem. Cataracts can progress despite UV protection, and many different factors play a role, including age, genetics, medical conditions, smoking, and more.
