    Mary Becka AAOE board member

    Mary Becka — Chair

    Practice Administrator — Fairview Eye Center
    Mary has 25 years of experience in health care administration. She received her bachelor of science in gerontology from Bowling Green State University. Since 2009, she has managed the Fairview Eye Center near Cleveland, Ohio, which includes management of five MDs, four ODs, 45 staff members, four offices and three optical shops.

    Nancy Baker — Past Chair

    Practice Administrator — Summit Eye Associates, P.C.
    Nancy has 25 years of experience in medical administration. Before transitioning to ophthalmology in 2004, she worked for a variety of specialties including OB/Gyn, General Surgery and Internal Medicine, and specializes in revitalizing under-performing practices. She is currently the administrator for Summit Eye Associates, a medium size practice in Hermitage, TN. Previously, she was the administrator for Elander Eye Medical Group, Inc., a small group practice in Santa Monica, California from 2004 to 2014. She received her Bachelor of Arts from U.C. San Diego.

    Kristin Carter MD

    Kristin Carter, MD

    Managing Partner — Clarity Eye Care & Surgery
    Dr. Kristin Carter has been in private practice for nearly 20 years and founded Clarity Eye Care & Surgery, specializing in cataract surgery, as well as comprehensive ophthalmology. Dr. Carter serves on the Health Policy Committee for the Academy as well as representing ophthalmology for the state of Arizona on the Carrier Advisory Committee. Dr. Carter is a former president and a current board member of the Arizona Ophthalmological Society. She has been very involved in ophthalmic education by serving on several ophthalmic publications’ editorial boards, developing content for the ONE network and teaching courses on cataract surgery, coding and new technology in the eye operating room.

    Ravi Goel MD AAOE Board member

    Ravi D. Goel, MD

    Clinical Instructor, Wills Eye Institute — Comprehensive Ophthalmologist, Cherry Hill, NJ
    Dr. Goel is a clinical instructor at Wills Eye Hospital and a comprehensive ophthalmologist in Cherry Hill, N.J. He has served on the Academy's Young Ophthalmologist Committee and EyeNet editorial advisory board. A graduate of the Academy's Leadership Development program, he currently serves on the Academy's Product Advisory Committee (Communications Secretariat) and AMA Ophthalmology Section Council. He is a past chair of the AMA's Young Physician Section, past president of the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology and recipient of top doc awards from South Jersey Magazine and SJ Magazine.

    Sean D Goodale, CPA, MBA

    Sean is the CEO of Retina Associates in Kansas City and has over 29 years’ experience in health care administration and financial management. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Retina Associates, P.A. the largest Retina only practice in the Greater Kansas City area with 8 Retina surgeons and 13 locations. He has also worked as the CFO and CIO of a large multi-specialty physician practice management organization. In addition, Mr. Goodale serves or has served on national and regional advisory committees in health care and business, including local and national committees of the MGMA and HFMA.

    Ann Hulett

    Ann M Hulett, CMPE

    CEO Eyehealth Northwest, PC
    Ann is the CEO of EyeHealth Northwest in Portland, Ore., comprised of 26 ophthalmologists, 10 ODs, two ASCs and over 350 employees. She has 25 years experience as a medical practice administrator, 14 in ophthalmology. She worked as the administrator at Rocky Mountain Eye Center in Pueblo, Colo., during which time she served five years on the AAOE Board and received the Secretariat Award. She has also worked as CFO and CEO of a large cardiology practice in New Mexico. Having started her career as a CPA, Ann enjoys working in areas of finance as well as group governance and physician communications.

    Sue Loen

    Susan M. Loen

    Practice Administrator — Bucks-Mont Eye Associates
    Sue began her career with a small optometry practice in Pennsylvania in 1990. She briefly worked at a retina practice in Pennsylvania before she moved to Seattle and became the billing manager of a medium-sized retina practice for several years. She then became the practice administrator of a smaller retina practice. In 2010, she moved back to the Pennsylvania to take a position as the practice administrator for Bucks-Mont Eye Associates, which consists of eight providers. Sue also serves on the AAOE EHR committee, the AAOE meeting committee, and the AAOE leadership development committee. Sue received an Academy Secretariat Award in 2016 for her contributions to AAOE.

    Natalie Loyacano AAOE Board member

    Natalie Loyacano, COMT, OSA, OCS, ROUB

    Practice Administrator — The VitreoRetinal Eye Center
    Natalie has been in ophthalmology for over 30 years. She began her career in 1984 working as an ophthalmic assistant and ophthalmic surgical assistant. She obtained her first JCAHPO certification in 1989. Natalie has experience as a Clinical Director and Clinical Research Coordinator. In 2005, she became the Practice Manager for a solo retina specialist, assisting him in beginning his solo career.

    Joanne Mansour

    Practice Administrator —The Virginia Retina Center
    Joanne began her career in ophthalmology in 1988 in Toronto, Canada. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Santa Clara University. She is the executive director of a small non-profit. Joanne has managed the Virginia Retina Center, since 2004. Under her management, the Virginia Retina Center has grown to 3 locations and four physicians.

    Rob Melendez MD AAOE Board member

    Robert F. Melendez, MD, MBA

    Partner, Eye Associates of New Mexico — Clinical Assistant Professor, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center
    Dr. Melendez is a partner at Eye Associates of New Mexico, a private practice of more than 45 ophthalmologists and optometrists and a clinical assistant professor at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. He has been in practice for nearly 10 years and is passionate about educating and mentoring medical students and young ophthalmologists. He serves as the Academy's Editor-in-Chief of the Ophthalmic News and Education (ONE®) Network and chairs the Young Ophthalmologist Committee. He has a strong interest in marketing, social media, leadership, strategic planning, and clinical efficiencies.

    Robert Wiggins AAOE Board

    Robert E. Wiggins, Jr. MD, MHA

    Managing Partner — Asheville Eye Associates
    Senior Secretary for Ophthalmic Practice — American Academy of Ophthalmology
    Dr. Wiggins serves on the Academy Board of Trustees as the Senior Secretary for Ophthalmic Practice and is a member of the Executive Committee. He serves on the AAOE Board of Directors and AAOE Program Committee. He is a past member of the AAOE EHR Committee and AAO POACE Committee and has served on a number of Academy task forces. He is a recipient of the AAO Achievement Award and Secretariat Awards for Education and Practice Management.

    Dr. Wiggins graduated from medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill and performed his ophthalmology residency at the Duke Eye Center. He completed a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children's Hospital and returned to Duke for a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship. In 2003 he obtained a Master of Healthcare Administration degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.

    After clinical training, he took a position for one year as a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Since 1991 he has been employed at Asheville Eye Associates in North Carolina where he practices pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology. He has served as the managing partner there since 2000. He and his wife, Kim, have three children.

    In addition to work with the Academy, Dr. Wiggins serves on the AAPOS Board of Directors as president and as the finance chairman. He is an examiner with the American Board of Ophthalmology and serves on the OMIC Board of Directors as treasurer.
